siRNA Delivery Centre

In January 2003, an siRNA Delivery Centre (www.sirna.dk) has been established with support from the Danish Technical Research Council. It was founded by a constellation of academic groups at the Department of Molecular Biology, University of Aarhus, and at the Department of Pharmaceutics, The Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, with inclusion of a large pharmaceutical company, H. Lundbeck A/S - and Pipeline Biotech A/S.

What is siRNA?

By a phenomenon called RNA interference (RNAi) 21 nucleotide small interfering RNAs (siRNA) can elicit an effective degradation of specific mRNAs in human cells. Since the specificity and efficiency of the RNAi approach in “knock down” of genes is unprecedented, a renewed optimism in development of drugs with high therapeutic potential has been created.
